Treatment of gynecomastia

Treatment of gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is an unhealthy phenomenon that affects a lot of men. Gynecomastia is the enlargement of the breast size in men due to the enlargement of the breast tissue and the large mammary glands located directly behind the nipple. Gynecomastia can affect one or both breasts, and it can make the person feel embarrassed or humiliated to take off his clothes in front of others. Each case of gynecomastia requires a different therapeutic approach based on its type, degree, and primary reason.

Reasons for gynecomastia:
A hormonal imbalance between the estrogen and testosterone hormones is the primary cause of gynecomastia in men. The male hormone testosterone is secreted at higher rates in men than the female hormones estrogen and progesterone. However, in the case of gynecomastia, an imbalance between the high levels of the male hormone testosterone and the female hormone estrogen occurs, causing estrogen to start controlling the appearance of female characteristics, particularly in the male breast. This imbalance may manifest at any age and include the following symptoms:
• In the immediate post-natal phase, more than 50% of newborn males may be born with large breasts because of the increased percentage of estrogen in their bodies from the mother after childbirth or as a result of the increased estrogen levels in breast milk. Within 3 to 4 weeks after birth, the symptoms of huge breasts fade and the breasts revert to their usual size as the body naturally adjusts the ratios between the male hormone testosterone and the female hormones estrogen and progesterone.
• At puberty, a period ranging from 12 to 14 years, during which hormonal changes occur in both the male and female bodies. Gynecomastia is a defect that occurs very naturally and disappears after the start of this stage, usually within 6 months to a year.
• At 50 to 80 years, this is the stage in which gynecomastia appears most frequently among men, as at that stage one in every four men experiences gynecomastia.

Gynecomastia can also appear due to other factors that differ from the change in the ratios of male and female hormones in men, such as:
• Obesity.
• Thyroid disorders.
• Diseases of the testicles or adrenal glands.
• Diseases of the reproductive glands in men.
• Kidney failure.
• Administrating several medications that cause male hormonal imbalance, such as anti-anxiety, fertility medications, anti-fungal, chronic heart disease medications, some heartburn medications, and others.

Symptoms of gynecomastia in men:
Gynecomastia in men appears as an enlargement of the breast gland tissue or as fatty deposits behind the nipple. It can occur in both breasts or just one, and is usually not accompanied by pain. However, some individuals experience pain when pressure is applied.

How to prevent gynecomastia?
As we previously stated, the imbalanced hormonal changes of male and female hormones in the perinatal period, adolescence, or even in old age are the primary cause of the development of gynecomastia in males. By identifying the primary cause, gynecomastia can be avoided. It is difficult to prevent gynecomastia in case of hormonal causes. But if the person is taking the previously mentioned medications, he must stop and replace them with other medications that do not cause gynecomastia side effect. It is also important to avoid consuming any products that naturally contain estrogen, such as soy products and lavender.
If the cause of gynecomastia is one of the other diseases mentioned, it is advised to treat the disease with a healthy diet and daily exercises and to avoid excessive obesity and breast fat accumulation, which can induce breast gynecomastia.

Dr. Mina Mamdouh always seeks to give his patients the best possible figure, so he constantly searches for all available cosmetic treatment options to make them feel confident. He can do all of the following to cure gynecomastia:
1. Vaser gynecomastia treatment:
It is a technique that treats gynecomastia in men whose main cause is obesity and overweight, so those excessive accumulations are eliminated by dissolving them using the Vaser technique under the influence of ultrasound, or getting rid of the breast tissue by fragmenting it with Vaser. It also plays a significant role in the breast sculpting process by stimulating the production of collagen due to its high precision and efficient waves.

2. Surgical treatment of gynecomastia:
Throughout the procedure, the patient must be subjected to general anesthesia. Then Dr. Mina Mamdouh, a specialist in plastic surgery, sculpting, and body contouring,  begins to make multiple surgical incisions in the breast or under the armpit to remove the enlarged breast tissue and any mammary glands around it. Then these surgical incisions are closed with high-quality cosmetic sutures, which do not leave scars or have any negative side effects.
